The Human Rights Foundation and Their Fearless Leader: Thor Halvorssen

The Human Rights Foundation is a New York-based non-profit that exposes human-rights abuses around the world through active on-the-ground reporting. Their work includes traveling to foreign countries and interviewing political dissidents, organizing human-rights protests, penning honest and cut-throat criticisms of political figures, and lobbying international organizations to punish corrupt governments.
The group is most well known for two things: their annual Oslo Freedom Forum, and their eccentric leader Thor Halvorssen. The Oslo Freedom Forum is an annual dinner where dissidents, notable human rights experts, philanthropists, and journalists come together to discuss current human rights problems and news. The HRF even ends the night with an award ceremony that recognizes political dissidents for their work in the field.

Thor Halvorssen a Venezuelan-born human rights activists that founded the HRF in 2005. He is the descendant of Venezuela’s first president and the liberator of South America, Simone Bolivar. His Father and Grandfather were both leaders in business and heavily involved in several human rights groups and committees.

Halvorssen has spent his entire life fighting for what he believes is right, and has shown that he is not afraid to be part of the action. Deploring the methods of typical human rights organizations, such as writing long winding reports and doing academic research, Halvorssen is on the field almost every day of the year.

He has been captured and imprisoned by foreign police for interviewing controversial dissidents, and has also taken part in missions that are meant to educate and liberate sheltered populations. His latest mission was trying to get information and leaflets to the North Korean general population.

According to Huffington Post, Halvorssen has managed to spread his energy to several industries to try and find better ways to further his human rights mission. He often connects Silicon Valley techies to dissidents to help them better track and propagate information. He is also a part-time producer, flying to LA to produce and co-produce films and televisions series that focus on the theme of freedom and human rights.
