Poverty undoubtedly exists in almost every society. Many writers have unsuccessfully tried to highlight the plight of those living in abject poverty. American singer, Doug Levitt is among individuals who are successfully highlighting the plight of those who suffer from historical injustices. Levitt uses his multimedia artistic project, which he has aptly named “The Greyhound Diaries”. He explores the state of poverty in the US through music, authorship and photography.
For years, American artistes have chosen to take a well beaten path to pursue their careers. This explains why most of them have failed to fully bring out the American story. Not many have managed to break beyond the normal daily headlines. Levitt has however managed to capture the attention of the entire nation by penning lines that highlight the existing economic calamity. This in itself is an unconventional route.
Despite taking a nonconformist track, Levitt has managed to show his audience that they can take charge of their lives and rise above social and economic precincts pinning them down. Levitt uses his musical performance to inspire hope. He not only sings but also uses his moment on the stage to share his experiences as he crisscrossed the country on the popular Greyhound buses.
Levitt was born and brought up in Washington D.C. His mother was a council member in Washington, something that opened his eyes to activism from a young age. He attended a number of public schools in Washington before ending up at Woodrow Wilson High School where he recognized his artistic abilities. He is also an alumnus of Cornell University and the London School of Economics.
While studying at the London School of Economics, Doug also worked as a CNN correspondent. His love for music however took precedence. This saw him switch from journalism to singing and songwriting. He moved back to America in 2001 to further his music career. It is around this time that he met renowned producer, David Henry. The duo has gone on to form one of the most productive singer-producer collaborations. Doug’s activism has similarly made him one of the most recognizable names in the American civil society.
